Welcome To My Basement

Follow Me To Be Entertained and Informed

Bob in the Basement is a site that features book summaries that go beyond reviews. It's sort of a Cliff's Notes - Bob's Notes - of fiction and non-fiction that I find interesting.  People like my take on the books because they can get a good ida of what the author wrote without having to actually read the book.

There also is a section of pictures of political figures that I took when I was doing that for a living. Tip O'Neill and Ted Kennedy grace the pages as do many other pols.

Bob in the Basement started in June of 2020, when the COVID pandemic was changing our lives. The world we knew was disrupted for all and upended for many. Sending out a weekly newsletter/curation added an edge to what was a soft schedule of things I to do while we were locked down. Having a to meet a deadline every week to create something that people enjoyed gave me a goal that I have to accomplish. It motivated me to do work that I enjoy. As COVID calmed down, I cut down my work to doing this every two weeks,

After COVID happened in the spring of 2020, I began sending out summaries of books that I find interesting. The book treatments, like my blog isn’t opinion-based. The goal is to make it informational and entertaining. As was the case with many people, the pandemic gave me time to do things, including reading more and writing about what I had read. Bob in the Basement in Boston was initially sent out to a few friends, with the distribution list expanding over time. These are robust summaries – Bob’s Cliff Notes in a sense – of what I read. The books are primarily non-fiction but I do include some novels. such as text, images, links, etc.

Back in the spring of 2020, I was just as blindsided by the pandemic as anybody. While I was still doing some work, there was a lot of empty space in my to-do list. I started sending out a curated email that talked a bit about what I was doing. To make it actually interesting, each week I summarized a book that I had found interesting. People liked to get a handle on a book without having to actually read it, so I continued to write and send out overviews of various books.

Every two weeks, I produce a potpourri of words that give readers access to book reviews, analysis of current issues, interesting videos, and pictures that I have taken that can open up new vistas to viewers.

But by March of 2020, many of us knew that a lot was changing. Our work lives moved to virtual digital spaces and our social lives were put on hold. It was a bit scary but It was also pretty boring. Life has improved dramatically since then.

While the world has learned how to live with COVID, we still face very trying challenges. Political systems across the globe are under stress. Digital media like Facebook and Twitter are just as likely to put out misinformation as real information. Many people all over the ideological spectrum have battened down in their information cocoons that allow no dissenting opinions.

People like books but just don't have the time read too many.  These summaries give you a pretty good idea of what's going on in the book without having to read it.
